Charles C. Dawson, Untitled (Education) The Crisis, August, 1927.

This year the annual education issue featured on the cover a young black man wearing a mortar board and carrying the banner of The Crisis and an American flag walking with a young woman in Egyptian dress carrying a torch. She ties the student to the past of African history and culture --via Egypt--as she leads him to the future. A traditional classical vase on the right and the buildings --presumeably institutions of higher education -- make up the backgrond. The artist advocates formal, classical education for black youth, combined with a grounding in their cultural roots.
