The button was created by the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), which was founded in 1974, shortly after the Supreme Court legalized women’s rights to an abortion. CLUW was a consistently strong advocate for reproductive rights within the broader labor movement, insisting that being “pro-union” and “pro-choice” were both about empowerment and control over one’s life and labor.
The 1973 Roe v Wade decision was overturned in 2022, leading to new uses for what many hoped was an historic artifact.
