Kathy Andrade
Creative Trouble Making
By the mid 20th century the radical roots of Central and South American immigrants like Andrade played an influential role in steering both the Liberal Party and sections of the labor movement toward actively engaging with immigrant communities and issues.
ILGWU Local 23-25 initiatives such as citizenship classes, voter registration drives, and multicultural activities were spearheaded or inspired by Andrade as education director.
Andrade's life embodied the word multicultural. She jumped into the linguistic, cultural and culinary traditions of everyone she met, always curious, always engaging, always connecting (and organizing). Before she became fluent in English she learned Yiddish, Italian and Greek—in order to communicate with the workers around her.
