House and Flowers

Myrtle, Mingo County, West Virginia, 1972

Retired miner George Johnson sits on the front of his sister's porch; she stands nearby. They are seen with compassion, as are the tin-can flowerpots, the ivy crawling up the building posts, and the flowered curtains on the window. Each artifact speaks of its owners and of their intense feeling for the things they have fashioned.
