Making Biscuits on Corn Husking Day, 1939-40.

Photograph by Marion Post Wolcott.

The sight of the prospective biscuits is enough to make the viewer's mouth water, but one would like to see the face of the person preparing this delicacy. Perhaps that is exactly why Ms. Wolcott does not allow us to see her. What we imagine is always more impressive than what we actually see. The photograph also demonstrates that a person devoted to the fight against fascism and saving its victims can turn her attention (and ours) to more mundane thoughts.
