¡Sí, Se Puede! Yes, We Can!

The “Justice for Janitors” campaign in Los Angeles in April 2000 is the subject of the beautifully illustrated bilingual children’s book we have excerpted here. The campaign aimed to organize the largely immigrant workers who clean the city’s office buildings each night. The book was inspired by the extraordinary efforts and courage of the people who work as janitors.

The text for the book was written by Diana Cohn, the illustrations are by Francis Delgado, and a poem by Luis J Rodriguez is included. The story is told by Carlos, a janitor’s son, about his mother.

La campaña “Justicia para los Limpiadores de Oficinas” en abril del 2000 en la ciudad de Los Angeles, es el sujeto de un bello libro bilingüe ilustrado del cual acá tenemos un extracto. La campaña fue dirigida a organizar un gran grupo de trabajadores inmigrantes que limpian las oficinas de los edificios de esa ciudad todas las noches. Este libro fue inspirado por los esfuerzos extraordinarios de estas personas quienes trabajan como limpiadores de oficinas.

El texto del libro fue escrito por Diana Cohn, las ilustraciones por Francis Delgado, y el poema por Luis J. Rodriguez esta incluido. La historia es contada por Carlos, el hijo de una limpiadora de oficinas y es acerca de ella, su madre.

Beneath steel and concrete,
Beneath night’s wandering shadow,
Come the eyes, voices and arms—elbows and knees—
That make buildings shine, magnifying the sun into all our faces.
The nameless, the scorned, the ignored—yet
They are the humanity who make human things work.

Mothers and children, fathers and uncles, family and family—
They come to make this city dance, the rhythm of what is just,
What is secure—the dance of strike and protest, demand and dignity.
They toil inside these glass temples—they clean them—
The truly human who now step into the streets, into our tomorrows,
And declare: Basta! Enough! What we clean, we also make scared.

Bajo el acero y concreto,
Bajo las sombras nómadas de la noche
Llegan los ojos, las voces, brazos—codos y rodillas—
Los que hacen brillar el edificio, magnificando el sol en nuestras caras.
Los sin nombres, los rechazados, los ignorados—aún
Ellos son la humanidad quienes hacen las trabajar las cosas humanas

Madres y niños, padres y tíos, familia y familia—
Vienen hacer bailar a esta ciudad, los ritmos de lo que es justo,
Lo que es serguro—el baile de la huelga y protesta, demanda y dignidad
El duro trabajo adentro de estos templos de vidrio—ellos los limpian—
El verdadero humano quien da un paso a la calle ahora, dentro de nuestras mañanas
Y declara: ¡Basta! ¡Suficiente! Lo que limpiamos, lo hacemos sagrado.
