Social Unionism in Action

Local 91’s women’s basketball team, circa mid-1950s.

Might organizing multi-racial, multi-ethnic basketball teams be a form of activism? Here the members of Local 91’s women’s basketball team proudly display a trophy won in competition with other locals. The interracial composition of the team was not too common during that period. The man on the right is Harry Greenberg, business manager of Local 91, the children’s dressmakers local; the other men could be union officials and/or team coaches.
