Trained in the ancient art of repoussé in France, master metal worker Jean Wiart fabricated the torch of the Statue of Liberty in 1985. In this image, Wiart, founder of L-M-C Corporation, covers a plaster rendering of the flame of the torch with steel to create a mold. He will then hammer copper sheets over the steel to create the copper flame.

This torch, fabricated by L-M-C Corporation, was the first realization of the original design by Auguste Bartholdi. The copper flame was gilded by Ateliers Gohard.
