One of the major innovations introduced by the ILWU as a result of the 1934 strike was the union hiring hall, which replaced the notorious "shape up" and allowed waterfront workers to line up for jobs without discrimination. The union's hiring hall was able to survive the provisions of the Taft-Hartley Law, which made most such union employment facilities illegal.
