Nail Salon, Art Hazelwood, September 1997
She bends her neck to scrub your toes.
She stiffens her arms to trim your cuticles.
She twists her fingers to place diamonds on your nails.
She holds her breath for 10 hours a day
in a box filled with all sorts of chemicals
because your money is more important than her health.
She nods when you talk to her about your day
even though she doesn’t understand your language
because your money is more important than her voice.
She bows when you wave goodbye
with your new glittering hands
and your cash in her blistering hands
because your money is her life.
